Fly to Freedom | BAMM North | Hull City of Culture | 2017

In 2017 Hull became Britain’s City of Culture and our northern branch of BAMM (British Association for Modern Mosaic) was sucessfull in applying for a Lottery grant to take part in the celebrations. Our winning proposal was to install over one hundred mosaic birds in Hull’s Paragon station, the birds were to be made by our own BAMM North artists and in workshops run by us throughout the wider Hull community.
We limited the number of designs for the birds to give an overall pattern but then gave all artists complete freedom to create their birds as they wanted, the result was remarkable. There are no two birds the same and our only rules were in the techniques needed to make the birds durable and that all the birds were flying in the same direction and therefore flying to freedom.
